It took me a little while to figure out where to get my Om on... every studio has a different vibe, and let's be honest, there are so many out there. On the checklist? Not uptight. Cool community feel. Great teachers. And actually being able to get into a class. [Yes, these seem simple, but I'd rather go to a chill place than get some very un-zen stare downs from my yoginis if I'm a minute late]. Here are four great studios that fit the bill:
Lyons Den Power Yoga [TriBeCa]
What it is: Hot Baptiste-style yoga. If you're not familiar with the style, basically, you're working really hard (like 8 wheel poses kind-of-hard) and you're getting a really great work out. Co-founded by SoulCycle master instructor Bethany Lyons, this studio knows how to take it to the next level.
Perfect if you want to: Get Soul sweaty in a yoga class, get toned, and really get your heart rate pumping.
Tips: The 90 minute classes are intense, so try starting with the hour class. Also, there is only one shower, so factor that in if you're trying to go before work.
Yoga Vida (NoHo/ Greenwich Village)
What it is: A studio offering classes ranging from Flow to Restorative to Basics to Advanced, taught in a relaxed and easy going way. All of the teachers are awesome-- I girl-crush on many of them because they're just so cool.
Perfect if you want to: Get great adjustments from the teachers, be in a cool yoga community environment, make friends, and dive deeper into the philosophy.
Tips: Their workshops are really great, and they have student discounts for classes if you're eligible.
Modo Yoga (West Village)
What it is: Hot power yoga, normally 60 minutes, divided by levels; Very intense, very fast paced.
Perfect if you want to: Sweat out your demons and get flexible.
Tips: Book in advance, as the classes fill up (you'll probably be really close to your neighbor, too, so try to get a spot along the wall). And bring an extra towel and change of clothing for after... you will want it.
Yoga to the People [Multiple locations]
What it is: A Bikram-like style hot yoga, hot vinyasa, or power flow class. It's all donation based, making it accessible to everyone.
Perfect if you want to: Practice on a budget.
Tips: It can get crowded, so try to get there early and get a spot. The teachers aren't posted online, just the times, so come with an open mind.
Where do you like to bend it?

Lately I've been feeling like a muffin manda. Maybe it's the fact that it's warm and summer and berry season, or maybe it's my undying love of breakfast foods (aka breakfast breads), but I have been trying every muffin under the sun. Until now. I've finally filled the muffin recipe void in my life.
